CARINA HEMMINGS

Whats your name and where are you from?

My name is Carina Hemmings and I am half English, hamf spanish. I am based in Girona, Spain.

What Do you Do?

Along with my partner, founded End Pictures, a collection of vintage vernacular photography; we frame these anonymous original prints, that are unique, to give them a second life.

What inspired you to start? Do you remember the first time you made contact with your domain?

I come from a family of jewellers, so I went a step further and decided to frame these original pictures with the Tiffany tecnique and turn them into a jewell. There will only be one of a kind.

Do you have any habits that get you in a creative mindset?

Habits that get me into a creative mood: Going through the collection of old pictures and categorizing them, trying to guess what was behind each scene, where and when was the photo taken …this gives me the drive to imagine and transform it into a piece of jewellery. I try to stay true to the essence of the picture itself. For instance, I found a batch of pictures of plants and started the series “The botanicals” inspired by the poetic order of botanical families.

I also like surround myself with little objects that I cherish and are meaningful to me and I often incorporate them into the piece of jewellery, such as broken china with flowers, vintage charms, etc

I also do some research of ancient pieces of jewellery such as the “lovers eyes” (time before photography, people were desperate to give each other not just images of themselves, but part of themselves, the portrait of the eyes of the lovers became popular…) I use photography to give them a new approach.

If you could venture into any field at all, which would you choose?

If I could venture into a different field: I absolutely love cinema, it would be a dream to work in something related to it: from scriptwriting, photography, art direction… (although not acting!)

What do you hope people feel or take away from looking or experiencing your work?

I think of my pieces as if they were amulets, small creations that have a hidden and magical meaning, which serve as inspiration and protection to whoever wears or contemplates them.

Where can people reach you?

At the moment I can be reached by email, but very soon I will put the pieces in the website under carinahemms x end pictures.
