Faye

What’s your name and where are you based?

Faye, Cape town

How would you describe what you do in a few words?

I make Art

You describe FAYE as a moniker, how does that alter or expand the way you make or present your work? Is FAYE someone you become, or someone who becomes you?

Faye is someone I Become through my development. He is the culmination of my experiences and the embodiment of my psyche.

You’re both an artist and a psychology student, how do these two worlds interact, in your daily thinking?

One is theory, the other is practice.. Studying psychology with a particular focus on neuroaesthetics allows me to make sense of what I make. It is also a fun theoretical paradigm to utilize for exploration of self and other.

Your work moves between photography, drawing, printmaking, and painting, how do you choose a medium for a particular idea?

Sometimes its predetermined, other times an intuitive response. I use whatever medium is necessary to say what it is I am trying to convey.

Mental health, pop culture, and neo-colonialism all live in the same space in your work. What draws you to these intersections?

They’re all intersections I inhabit.

How do you know when a piece is finished?

I don’t. I have to physically stop myself as soon as an inkling of ‘finishedness’ appears. Its complicated.

What’s one piece you’ve made that feels closest to the inside of your mind?

At the time, my series “whispers and counting – IV” that were shown at my exhibition at one park in Cape town in April 2024.

What’s the last object or space that moved you and why?

My laptop. Im playing the skee mask essential mix and it’s fucking pumping.

Do you think someone who knows you well would see your work as a reflection of who you are?

Yes, my mom. She cant stand it.

In life, what’s a word you use too often, and a word you wish you used more?

Lol the first is “nuance” the second is “forgive.”

Is there a material or medium you haven’t worked with yet that you’re curious to explore next?
